Bible: We started our unit on Moses. We are using Bob Jones Bible Truths K5 this year. I really like it. It is similar to Abeka and has alot of good resources. I supplement with our own Bible story books and last week I purchased some felt story pieces to use for a visual. The kids and I have had SO MANY great conversations brought out from our Bible lessons, including Heaven, Sin, Jealousy, Satan, Angels, Fear, Forgiveness, Kindness, and God's love. They have endless questions and are really curious about the things of God. It's really great!
Science: The kids are learning about all things "winter". We started off talking about seasons and what happens in each one. Since it is winter right now, we decided that we should learn more about that season first. (: This week we've been learning about hibernation and migration and what different animals do in winter. Last week, I found an AWESOME site called Brain POP Jr. It has all hundreds of different kinds of short cartoon like movies about topics from all subject areas. It also has many other resources like lesson plans, quizzes, worksheets, activities, even jokes! I signed up for a free trial (it's $75 for a year membership) and I really want to subscribe! We will see. The kids watched the seasons movie and the hibernation movie so far and they really liked them.
I printed out this worksheet from the Brain POP website for them to do in their workboxes. They had to draw what animals might hibernate in each place. I had Zach write the names of the animals:
Language Arts: Lately, we've just been doing alot of reading and writing. We haven't done alot of phonics except for Katelyn's workbook pages. I still need to find some more activities for word families to put in her workboxes. I don't want everything to be worksheets so I am going to try to come up with a few games to play with her. Zachary is still reading great! He is really into Batman right now so we found a some Batman books at the library and that's all he's been doing for the past couple days.
Math: One of Katelyn's math workboxes will be full of snow!!! Well, not really, more like full of cotton balls, but she will use the "snowballs" to form numbers and then count out that number of snowballs. Zachary could use some more addition and subtraction facts practice so he will do this activity in one of his workboxes (he has to match up the math facts). I got it out of one of my Mailbox Magazines (love those!).
I'll try to post more details of the lessons and activities we do so stay tuned. (;
