Managers of Their Chores- Part 1

A few days ago, I started ChorePacks with the kids. I had been wanting to get the book "Managers of Their Chores" for a while and finally got it on eBay for a good price! The chorepacks themselves didn't come with it but I figured I could make my own. The day the book came in the mail, I read it, and started coming up with a master chore list. I knew I wanted to have morning chores, afternoon chores and special Saturday chores (instead of afternoon chores for that day). We usually do chores on Saturday as a family so this will help with that.

It was harder than I thought to plan it all out because I had to consider what each child could physically do with minimal or no help, how often it needed to be done, who would do what, when they would do them, and the order in which they would do the chores. I started off with 5 chores for each chore time. The morning chores are mostly grooming and getting ready for the day. We do them after breakfast. Both kids have the same morning chores:

#1 Get Dressed
#2 Brush Teeth/Hair
#3 Make Bed
#4 Pick up Room
#5 Bible Reading/Prayer

They had been doing these things pretty routinely everyday, but having it written out and visual, like a list, helps them stay on task. They already have the routine memorized, and eventually I will add more chores to that time.

We start our afternoon chore time about an hour before dinner. Some of the chores are done before dinner and some are done after. This time also includes a weekly chore. For this pack, the kids have different chores. As the book recommends, I am going to have them keep these chores until they are very good at them and so they get used to doing them. I will probably rotate or change them every month or two.

Here's Zach's afternoon chores:
#1 Unload Dishwasher
#2 is the weekly chore and it broken down into days of the week- whatever day it is, he does that chore-
M: Fold Towels
T: Vacuum Family Room
W: Straighten closet/dresser
Th: Chore at Grandma and Grandpa's (we visit there every Thursday and the kids will do their afternoon chores there)
F: Sheets off bed
#3 Set Table for dinner
#4 Swiffer kitchen floor after dinner
#5 Pick up toys before bed

Here's Katelyn's afternoon chores:
#1 Unload silverware
#2 Weekly chore
M: Put laundry away (will usually be the towels Zach folds)
T: Wipe Appliances (fridge, stove and dishwasher fronts)
W: Straighten closet/dresser
Th: Chore at G&G's
F: Sheets off bed
#3 Pick up family room
#4 Dry dinner dishes (whatever doesn't go in dishwasher)
#5 Pick up toys before bed

Saturday chores are a few new ones plus a couple of dinner chores. Here are Zach's Saturday chores:
#1 Clean bathroom mirrors and counters (the kids bathroom only)
#2 Windex front glass door and french doors
#3 Wipe down kitchen table and chairs
#4 Set table for dinner
#5 Swiffer kitchen floor after dinner

Here's Katelyn's Saturday chores:
#1 Clean bathroom sinks (kids)
#2 Windex curio cabinet front
#3 Wash highchair
#4 Pick up family room
#5 Dry Dinner dishes

So that's it for now! Tomorrow I will post pictures of the chorepacks and what I used to make them!

  1. I love it! This is exactly what I've been thinking I need to establish in my home - morning AND afternoon chores. I find a need for both and had a hard time trying to make it work last year. With God's help, I will establish that this year. I wish you well!
