Flyswatter Bible Memorization Game

Okay, that sounds like a weird title, but first of all, let me tell you we use a new, clean flyswatter! The one for actual flies is in the laundry room. LOL.

We have been using A Beka's Bible ABC memory cards as a fun way to learn some simple verses. All three of my kids (ages 8, 6, and 3) have already memorized large chunks of Scripture like Deuteronomy 6:4-9. We are memorizing 26 verses that go along with the alphabet to say them all together as one big group. For example: A- All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23. B- Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Acts 16:31. We are also practicing finding the verses in the Bible to see who can find it the quickest (between me and the two older ones). Brings me back to my elementary school days. Sword drill anyone?! Ha!

The kids have learned about half the verses so far and can do pretty well remembering the verse for each letter, but have trouble with the references sometimes. I made up this little game to help the kids remember what reference goes with which verse.

I wrote the verses on index cards with the verse on one side and the reference on the other (use a pen that doesn't bleed through so they can't see the other side). I laid out 5 of the verses with the reference side up. Then I read a verse from the memory cards and they have to "swat" the matching reference with the flyswatter. If they get it right, they get a point. Then it's the next person's turn. After you go through all the verses (add in other cards as ones are used), you can add up the points or flip over the index cards and play another round with the verse side up and you call out the reference.

Click HERE for a video (not made by me) of the verses that you could use. The song is from Psalty's Camping Adventure. Anyone else grow up with Psalty? I still have all my old cassette tapes! I even still have Psalty VHS tapes! The kids love them! LOL! Anyway, the cards that we are using have many of the same verses as the Psalty song, but some are different. I might actually use some from the song since I like certain ones of them better than the ones on the cards.

Click HERE for a list of the verses (in the psalty song) as well as some other things from the Bible you might consider having your children memorize. We are going to memorize the books of the Bible next. Stay tuned for ideas and songs for that. (:
