Workboxes- Round 2

So I've decided to give workboxes another go 'round. Our first time using them went well but the novelty wore off pretty quickly. It was not as exciting for the kids after a few weeks and the excitement wore off for me as well after seeing how much work it was filling the boxes every night. I planned on using them this year when I made my beginning of the year plans but decided to give ourselves a few months before jumping into them again. I really like the idea of workboxes and think we can make it work.

One thing that I think will help is that I brought the workboxes upstairs. Last year they were in the basement because that is where all my supplies are, and I thought it would be easier to fill them. It ended up being a pain to have the kids go up and down the stairs to get each box. This time, I will have to bring the supplies up and down the stairs, but it isn't that big of a deal, I'll just bring everything up at once and take it back down each day. Alot simpler than the 20 time round trip for the kids to get the boxes every day. DUH. Also, I realized that the carts fit perfectly in a little corner of our den where we do school! Yay! Anyway, this time, I am going to only have 6 boxes to start, one for each main subject. Our carts have 10 drawers but the last 4 will be for me to put in craft ideas, fun activities and science experiment ideas.

As for what goes in the boxes, that will be mostly their Abeka worksheets and activities. I am going to put in all the supplies they need for each lesson and that way, it will all be together. I keep my lesson books on a shelf but they are right in the room with the workboxes. All the other supplies are downstairs, but I am keeping a small bin of items we use everyday in the room with us.

Well, I am excited to try this again. The kids were excited to see the workboxes upstairs. I hope that it helps motivate them and that if anything, it helps our day be more organized. I always feel bad just throwing 3 or 4 worksheets at them at the end of their lessons. I think it was too overwhelming. This way, they do their work in manageable chunks, one box at a time. Either way, it will be fun to change things up a bit! Wish us luck!

  1. I have the same problem when I used the work boxes, not so exciting after a while and too much daily work for me. I'm only teaching one kid right now though. When I have more than one in school I will probably revisit workboxes again.

  2. I hope it goes well for you, Leslie. It's always nice when you can make a good idea work for you again. :-)

  3. We're using workboxes too (or a version). I just posted about some neat ideas I found to make it a little easier.

  4. When I first heard of workboxes I wanted to try but haven't yet :o\ One of my problems was having my school stuff all over the house because we had space issues. Now that the space issues are worked out I wonder if this would work for us. I totally forgot about workboxes until I read this. Keep us posted on how it goes!

    Have a blessed evening!

  5. Thanks, Amy! The workboxes are working out great this time around! I am just putting their normal work in there divided by subject/activity. It's nice because they do it in little chunks and it's not so overwhelming. You should try it! There are so many ways you can do it!
