The day I became a mom

Today is my son Zachary's 7th birthday- the day we both started a new life. His was only beginning, mine was changed forever.

His birth was such an amazing experience for me. All my children's births were, but there is something about that first time. Everything was so new, so exciting, so nerve-wracking! So different than you thought it would be, but better.

I admit, I really had no clue about being a mom before I had kids. Sure, I had played with baby dolls as a child and then babysat when I got older. I even taught elementary school. But nothing prepares you for the moment you hold your OWN child in your arms. One that is yours forever. One that you are 100%, 24/7 responsible for. One that steals your heart like no other child has or ever will.

Zachary's birth was so special to me because we had experienced the loss of our first pregnancy and had just come through so much grief. When he was born, all I knew was joy. Truly, "sorrow lasts for the night, but joy comes in the morning".

Here is what I wrote in my journal after he was born...

The first time I saw you, I was in awe! You were so beautiful! You were all red and screaming, and I couldn't believe it was really you. I felt like I was dreaming. It was like watching a movie but realizing it's really happening. When I touched you, it was the most amazing feeling. I've dreamed about holding you and seeing you for so long. I couldn't take my eyes off of you. I don't remember anything else but your sweet little face and how beautiful you were. The moment I saw you for the first time was the best moment of my life.

Zachary, I love you with all my heart and I am so blessed to be your mommy! You are a gift from God and I am forever thankful for you.
